GRADE LEVEL: 11
COURSE LENGTH: 1 year
PREREQUISITES: Junior standing
TEXTS: The American Vision (Appleby, Brinkley, Broussard, McPherson, Ritchie)

SCOPE AND SEQUENCE: This is a course covering American History from 1700 to the present. The first semester ends at approximately 1900. The second semester focuses on the 20th century.
II. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a reading and writing course. In order to do well, students must remain current on their reading and writing assignments and have excellent attendance. American documents and Supreme Court cases are chronologically integrated into the course and an occasional film is used. Class discussions, current events, and all basic social studies skills, including vocabulary, are an integral part of this course.
III. ILLINOIS GOALS ADDRESSED: 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18
Assignments: Students are to make their own study guides for the final exam for each semester. Those study guides, starting with Chapter 5 and including all chapters covered in class, must includeVocabulary and Main Ideas from the section reviews at the end of each section (students do not have to include any question that requires a graphic organizer). At some point these will be collected and be graded on level of completion as part of their final exam grade. Failure to do these section reviews will mean not passing the final exam. In most chapters, students will also be required to write “I learned papers”. For each section students would normally be required to write 1 paragraph per major subsection (in blue). There are normally 2-4 subsections per section. To get full credit, they must write at least the minimum number of paragraphs and more than 1 page total.
Assignments and due dates are subject to change.
